Basal metabolic rate (BMR) calculator
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the calories your body burns at complete rest for vital functions (breathing, heartbeat, keeping warm). This calculator estimates it with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the most widely used today.
The Mifflin-St Jeor formula
Where s = +5 for men and s = −161 for women. For example, a woman of 70 kg, 175 cm and 30: BMR ≈ 1,461 kcal/day.
BMR vs daily calories
BMR is only the at-rest burn. To know how many calories you need per day, multiply it by an activity factor (that’s TDEE, total daily energy expenditure); use the calorie calculator for that.
Frequently asked questions
Is it accurate? It’s a good population estimate; the real value varies with muscle mass and genetics.
Does it help with weight loss? As a reference: eating below your total burn (not your BMR) creates a deficit.
